REALIZATION OF A STUDY TO IDENTIFY DUNE FIXATION SITES WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE DRYLAND PROJECT (FEM 7)

Context:

As part of the DRYLAND project, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF 7) and implemented by the IUCN office in Mauritania, the mission to identify priority dune stabilization sites has been entrusted to the FUTUR SARL firm.

Mission objective

Identify and prioritize the sites most exposed to sand encroachment in the project's intervention areas, with a view to guiding future mechanical and biological dune stabilization actions to combat desertification.

Our main interventions

  • Document analysis and processing of available spatial data;
  • Field missions for the identification, biophysical characterization, and geolocation of at-risk sites;
  • Community consultations to integrate local perceptions and validate priority areas;
  • Development of a technical and cartographic report with operational recommendations for fixation activities.

Results achieved

  • Identification and prioritization of strategic sites for dune stabilization in the project's target areas;
  • Detailed GIS mapping sent to IUCN Mauritania to support operational planning;
  • Contribution to the fight against desertification and the restoration of degraded lands as part of the resilience of arid areas.
